The Office: MPD for Wrist Pain

Chronic or Acute wrist pain falls into 2 categories. Both are Excess. One is Excess Cold with or without Blood Stasis, and the other is Excess Heat with or without Blood Stasis.

  • Excess Cold:
    • MPD:   Right Proximal pulse is very wiry, stiff and can be at any depth. If Deep there is Blood Stasis with the Excess Cold
    • Hands and wrist are noticeable cold to touch, maybe numbness
    • Tendinosis
    • Herbs: Shen tong zhu yu tang 40
      • Si ni tang 30
      • Quan xie 7
      • Wu gong 7
      • Jiang can 7
      • Ru xiang 10
      • Mo yao 10
  • Excess Heat:
    • MPD:   Right Proximal pulse is pounding. Can be any shape. If Deep there is Blood Stasis and probably Dampness
    • Hands and wrists are noticeably hot and perhaps swollen
    • Tendinitis, Inflammatory arthritis, Inflammation
    • Herbs:
      • Astringents 70
      • Clear Heat 30
    • Herbs:
      • Astringents 50
      • Chi shao 10
      • 3 Yellows 10
      • Ren dong teng 20
      • Shi gao 20
    • Herbs:
      • Shi gao 25
      • Ren dong teng 30
      • Gui zhi 5
      • Zhi mu 5
      • Chi shao 5
      • Hu zhang 5
      • Yi yi ren 10
      • Qin jiao 10
      • Gan cao 5
      • Can sha 5
  • Herbal Additions:
    • If a great deal of Blood Stasis use: Shui zhi 7, Di bie chong 7. If numbness is pronounced use more Quan xie
    • If the pain moves around in the Excess Cold condition use: Wei ling xian and Fang Feng 10 each
    • If there is a lot of swelling in the Excess Cold case use: Fang ji and Bai zhu 10 each.
    • If there is Wind (pain moves or there is itchiness)  in the Excess Heat case add: Wu shao she 15.
    • If there is Yin Deficiency in the Excess Heat case add: Sheng di huang 20, Sang ji sheng 10
